The Level 3 Award in Education and Training 6502: the new course is launched

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is a brand new qualification accredited by Qfqual and developed in association with City and Guilds. The purpose of this new qualification is to give people the skills and abilities needed to start teaching or training adults. It also enables people who are already teaching or training to gain a nationally recognised award.

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training replaces the existing qualification called Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) and is generally regarded as the minimum requirement for those wishing to start teaching and training.

The new award is the latest continuation of a long line of entry qualifications for prospective trainers and teachers in the adult education/training fields. You may have heard of qualifications in the past such as the City and Guilds Adult Education Certificate, the Further and Adult Teachers Certificate, PTLLS 7303, PTLLS 6302 and the 7407 Stage 1.

All of these older qualifications provided the basic teaching skills and knowledge needed to go out and start teaching/training in a classroom or workplace environment.

Following a recent government report chaired by Robert Lingfield the qualification system is in the process of being improved and rationalised, leading to the Level 3 Award in Education and Training being introduced to supersede previous qualifications.

Level 3 Award in Education and Training  and PTLLS – similarities and differences

There are many similarities in course content between the PTLLS qualification and the new Award in Education and Training.

The main difference is that with the new qualification candidates are awarded a different range of individual units which they need to gain in order to qualify.

The Award in Education and Training contains three separate units, which can be thought of as modular components. When a candidate has completed an individual unit this is portable across a whole range of qualifications. So for example should somebody then wish to go on to take another teacher/trainer or assessor qualification they will not need to duplicate effort and work as their existing units will be recognised.

On the course you will learn:

  •    How to plan a lesson
  •    Using different presentation skills
  •    Choosing the right teaching methods
  •    Practice teaching sessions
  •    How to use teaching resources
  •    How to assess your students’ progress

One of the most important parts of the course is called “microteaching” this is where you get the opportunity to teach a short sample lesson to your colleagues on the course, all with the care and guidance of your expert tutor.

This is an opportunity to put into practice what has been learned on the course in a friendly and supportive situation. People find this an invaluable experience, and as well as being an essential requirement to qualify it ensures that everybody gets an important real-world taste of teaching.
